Doris Boxwell
Remembrance: Doris Boxwell
Doris passed away just a few weeks short of her 104th birthday,
She was the eldest daughter of John Boxwell a founder member of
Heswall Lawn Tennis Club.
I first met Doris when I joined the club in 1947 and in 1948 when
I was invited to join the committee Doris was an established and
respected member. She didn't play in the teams, but played socially
with her friends and was a regular attendee on Saturday afternoons.
Doris turned up each Tuesday and Thursday to provide match teas.
Tea was always served before the match started as in those times
of a somewhat relaxed commercial world, players turned up,
ate and went on court by 6 or 6-15.Our speciality of match teas
was MALT LOAF' christened by our players as 'DOUBLE FAULT
LOAF' and visitors were encouraged to have a second helping. A Saturday
special was (if you could call it special) was 'mint sandwiches',
but there was always plenty of bread and jam. All matches in those
days were friendly; How things have changed.
